Fall 2022
In an attempt to explore cultural phenomena and traditions rooted in adolescence in the American South, my work often approaches the viewer with a deceiving feeling of child-like innocence and mundanity. This installation approaches the viewer in the same way on the topic of water safety. This piece titled, “Front Float,” attempts to capture the danger of perception and perceived innocence of a situation. Inspired by curriculum often taught to children to infantize water safety, this piece attempts to engage with the viewer, forcing them to make a choice and reflect on potential outcomes: will she sink or float? With projection low to the ground contrasted with the timer, windows, and ribbons above and behind eye level, the viewer is forced to disorientation and further explore time and its effects.
